The engineering industry is in a constant state of innovation. Between technical advancements and rampant investment by developers, the science of building things came a long way in 2017. As we look to the year ahead, Shield Engineering always likes to ask which trends have staying power.

What will the future of engineering look like in 2018 and beyond?

Continued Consolidation

Strategic partnerships between engineering firms and construction companies are proving to be a value-add for largescale projects. Firms that offer comprehensive engineering and construction services are being looked to as the new norm in building; they streamline logistics, save developers money, and simplify adherence to the myriad regulatory burdens that will continue to impact both public and private projects. Turn-key structural, geotechnical, and environmental engineering services in addition to a full array of construction services are what many project managers now expect their engineering firm to offer.

Modeling Innovation

Modeling technology has opened the landscape of building and design. Using programs like Design-Assist, Design-Build, CAD, and many others, engineers are more thoroughly able to map the challenges and opportunities of buildings, from stormwater containment to sustainable “green” roofs. As computer modeling technology becomes more sophisticated, so too becomes engineers’ ability to predict and plan for situational anomalies specific to a parcel of land. Clients will continue to respond positively to more comprehensive solutions for integrating design and technical specs.

Advancing Materials

Structural materials are emerging that are smarter and more sustainable than ever before. From bendable concrete to composites used to create flat-pack bridges, few traditional building materials haven’t been undergoing a drastic redesign of late. Looking ahead, cutting edge engineers will find new opportunities both structurally and aesthetically to incorporate innovative materials. In 2018, look for design, not materials, to dictate the end-product of developers.

Investment in Infrastructure

Over the past several years, investment in public-facing infrastructure has been on a slow decline, but 2018 could be the year that changes. In combination with continually-increasing private investment in infrastructure (water, gas, bridges, pipelines), government-funded projects such as Brownfields redevelopments and highway maintenance will likely see an uptick. Key policy shifts at both the state and federal levels will likely precipitate the surge.

Shield Engineering is a leader in engineering innovation. Our team of experts offered integrated engineering and design services since long before it was “trendy.” We’ve always known it was the best way to do business.
