Top 5 Civil Engineering Marvels

While every building is truly a modern marvel, civil engineers have shaped history through their designs and achievements that are continually pushing forward and defining future landmarks through jaw dropping achievements.

Let's explore some of the world's most incredible civil engineering breakthroughs and share more about some of the elements that make these achievements projects for the record books.

The Channel TunnelChannel Tunnel - Wikipedia

Connecting England to France, this tunnel was originally proposed by Albert Mathieu in 1802 - and eventually completed in 1994. At 31 miles long, the entire tunnel provides car, bus, and train travelers an alternative to flying when crossing the English Channel. While it may not have the curb appeal of a towering skyscraper or bring the same sense of awe as the Hoover Dam, the Channel Tunnel is an example of advancement in technology coming together with innovation in design and a larger-than-life dream.

Panama Canal Panama Canal | History, Construction, Expansion, & Facts | Britannica

Much like the Channel Tunnel, population expansion and trade developments began to shape the dreams of engineers and those who began blazing a trail towards the future. After the French were unable to complete the project, the United States took over development of the Panama Canal in 1904. Ten years and $350 million dollars later, the Panama Canal was completed and became the most expensive construction project in US history up until that point.

It's also important to note that disease was rampant during the construction, wreaking havoc on the workers brought on to assist with construction. Between the French and American efforts, it's estimated that nearly 35,000 died during development.

Burj KhalifaBurj Khalifa - Wikipedia

Standing at a staggering 2,716 feet tall, the Burj Khalifa continues to reign as the world's tallest building. Located in the bustling hub of Dubai, the building is a beacon of innovation and a shining example of the standout successes of modern engineers.

Its 163 floors are filled with 900 high-end elegant apartments, providing residents with the view of a lifetime that they experience by simply looking out of their living room window.

Millau Viaduct

Millau Viaduct - Wikipedia

Nestled in the South of France is one of engineering's most impressive marvels, the Millau Viaduct. Standing at a maximum of 1,104 feet tall and totalling 8,071 feet long, the Millau Viaduct cost roughly $424 million. However, its construction was completed on December 14, 2004 after just three years of development and construction.

Prior to its completion, spanning the communes of Millau and Creissels required descending into the Tarn valley and creating hours of congestion and plenty of frustration for the surrounding community. In an effort to link the two limestone plateaus surrounding the route, the viaduct was planned and constructed where it continues simplifying transportation for motorists.

Palm Islands

Palm Islands - WikipediaUnder most circumstances, land being taken by rising sea levels is written off as a loss to Mother Nature. However, the Palm Islands of Dubai stand out as an example of engineering innovation that breaks the mold and helps make use of land that was deemed lost.

These Palm Islands - named quite literally - are home to numerous resorts and luxury living facilities that provide residents with an ultimate island getaway. While it's not the only famous reclamation project, it's certainly the most well-known because of its artistically-inspired design and incredible aesthetic.

While these are some of the most impressive projects that engineers have created, it's important to circle back to the foundational achievements that have provided so much to our society. From the place in which you work to the home in which you live, civil engineers make every aspect of our lives possible!
